The arithmetic first, then the tactics — and an honest look at the ceiling
Before any study plan, find out whether your target is possible:
A 2.90 over 80 credits, targeting 3.30 with 40 credits left: required = (3.30 × 120 − 232) ÷ 40 = (396 − 232) ÷ 40 = 4.10. Not achievable on a 4.0 scale. Retarget to 3.20 and the requirement becomes 3.80 — hard but real. This five-minute calculation prevents a semester of effort aimed at an impossible number, and it reframes the question from 'how do I raise my GPA' to 'what is the best GPA still available to me'.
Because GPA is credit-weighted, identical improvements are not worth identical amounts. Moving a grade up one full letter:

Two conclusions follow. Credit-heavy courses are where your study hours pay, and the lowest grades offer the most room — going from a D to a B is worth twice a C to a B, and is usually easier than pushing an existing B to an A. Perfectionism at the top of the transcript is the least efficient place to spend effort.
The same retake produces three different outcomes depending on institutional policy. Suppose a 4-credit course went from a D (1.0) to a B (3.0):

Under the third policy a retake can leave your GPA essentially unchanged while consuming a semester slot and tuition. Get the policy in writing from the registrar first — this is the single most consequential thing to check, and it is often buried in the academic catalogue rather than stated on the retake form.
Systematically hunting easy courses. It works arithmetically and fails on inspection — admissions readers see course titles, and a transcript that avoids rigour reads exactly as it is.
Chasing a 4.0 late in a degree. Past about 3.7 the returns collapse; the same hours put into research, an internship or a strong test score change your applications far more.
Overloading credits to dilute a bad grade. Adding credits increases the denominator but also the risk, and a heavy term that produces two new mediocre grades leaves you worse off than before.
Model the options before choosing between them. Enter your current record in the calculator, then add hypothetical courses and grades to see what each plan actually yields — the difference between two strategies is often smaller than the effort gap between them.
Early on, yes — meaningfully. Later, barely. With 30 credits behind you a perfect semester adds around 0.33; with 105 credits it adds around 0.13. Run the numbers before setting a goal, because the ceiling is fixed by arithmetic rather than effort.
It depends entirely on your school's repeat policy: grade replacement helps a lot, averaging both attempts helps half as much, and counting both separately can barely help at all. Check the policy before paying for a retake.
It raises the number and weakens the transcript, and admissions readers see the transcript. A limited version works — balancing two heavy technical courses rather than four — but systematically avoiding rigour is visible and counterproductive.
Target the heavy-credit courses you are currently doing worst in. Because credits are weights, moving a four-credit C to a B affects your GPA twice as much as the same improvement in a two-credit course.
