GPA stands for grade point average. Each course grade is converted to a grade point on your school's scale, weighted by how many credits the course carries, and averaged. That weighting is the part students most often get wrong: a four-credit course pulls the average roughly twice as hard as a two-credit course, so an A in a lab sequence is worth far more than an A in a one-credit elective. On a 4.0 scale, an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0 and a D is 1.0, with plus and minus grades landing on the thirds in between.
The formula is GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σcredits. Say you took Calculus I (4 credits, A = 4.0), English Composition (3 credits, B+ = 3.3) and Intro Psychology (2 credits, B = 3.0). The quality points are 16.0, 9.9 and 6.0, which sum to 31.9 across 9 credits, giving a GPA of 3.54. Institutions disagree about the details. Some cap A+ at 4.0 while others award 4.3; some treat 93 as the A threshold and others use 90; a few award no minus grades at all. Those differences move a transcript by 0.1 to 0.3 points, which is the width of most scholarship cut-offs. Always confirm the bands in your registrar's catalogue, then use the GPA scale chart as a cross-check rather than a substitute.
It matters where a number has to be compared quickly: scholarship screens, honours eligibility, graduate admissions filters and a shrinking set of employers who still publish a floor, usually 3.0. Beyond those gates its influence fades relative to research experience, internships and references. Two practical implications: protect the first year, because early credits sit in the denominator forever, and read the benchmark ranges for your own field instead of a national average.
