Every GPA calculation is the same operation: quality points divided by credits, where quality points are grade points times credits for each course. Nothing else about the method varies between institutions — what varies is the scale used to turn a grade into grade points, and the rules for which courses are included. A grade of B is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and 3.3 on a 4.3 scale — the same performance, a different number. Always report the scale with the figure. If you are converting from a percentage or from another country's system, convert course by course rather than converting a single overall average, and treat the result as an estimate. These three cases cause most of the confusion, and the rules are institutional rather than universal:

Multiply each course's grade points by its credits to get quality points, add the quality points up, then divide by total credits. Credits are the weights, which is why a 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit one.
A percentage average works directly with your marks; a GPA first converts each mark to a point value on a fixed scale, then averages those. Because the conversion is banded, two students with different percentages can share the same GPA.
3.0 is respectable, 3.5 is competitive, and 3.7 and above is strong. Past roughly 3.7 the marginal value drops sharply and reviewers start weighing research and experience more heavily.
The one your institution uses. The 4.0 scale is standard in the United States; 4.3, 4.5 and 5.0 scales are also in use elsewhere. Converting between them changes the number but not your standing, so always state the scale alongside the figure.
Normally yes — an F contributes 0 grade points while still adding its credits to the denominator, which is why a single failure is costly. Whether a retake replaces or merely supplements that grade depends on your school's repeat policy.
Usually not. Pass/fail courses carry credits but no grade points, so they are excluded from the calculation entirely — they cannot lower your GPA, and they cannot raise it either.
No. Every calculation runs in your browser. Your draft entries are kept in your own browser's local storage so a refresh does not wipe them, and the 'clear' button deletes them. Nothing is sent to a server.
Map each course's percentage to grade points using your institution's published scale, then take the credit-weighted average. Converting your overall percentage average in one step gives a different — and less defensible — answer.
An unweighted GPA caps every course at 4.0; a weighted GPA adds points for honours, AP or IB courses, so it can exceed 4.0. High schools mostly report weighted figures, universities mostly unweighted ones.
Yes. Enter every course from every term into the calculator as one list — that produces the correct cumulative figure. Do not average your semester GPAs together unless every term carried exactly the same number of credits.
Because of inertia. With 30 credits behind you a perfect semester adds around 0.33 to your cumulative GPA; with 105 credits behind you it adds around 0.13. Early semesters carry disproportionate weight.
